Though not of the profitable racist ilk of the Obama waffle mix, this is just plain bad. Jill Greenberg was hired by The Atlantic to shoot a cover of McCain. She asked for one more shot and set up a strobe for a horror movie shadow. Neither McCain nor his people realized what had taken place. After turning in the rather flattering shots for the cover she took home her last shots, photoshopped them and put them on her blog. Free country and her opinion, but bad taste and rather rude to both her subject and her employer.
The right is predictably and understandably upset (though I don't recall anything from them about the Obama waffle flap other than, "can't you take a joke").
Whatever we may think of McCain, he deserves more respect than this (as does Obama). This is not acceptable in my book, is not even remotely funny, and in all honesty, I'm offended by it.
If you have the stomach for it, there are other images here, that are equally offensive.

Honestly? I'm secure enough in my righteousness not to worry about permanently staining my soul by fighting in the dirtiest of ways for the next seven weeks. The McCain campaign is going scorched earth, and there isn't enough water on this planet to put it out.
In 2008, winning is the only thing.
Steve,
I understand what you're talking about, but part of what Obama's about is changing the culture and I think we betray his principles when we stoop to this level.
Even if it wasn't a problem for the Obama campaign it would, without making a judgement about you, still be a problem for me.
Obama will have a far better chance of changing the culture from inside the White House than from the Senate.
From either position I'm skeptical that he'll be able to change it. The opposition party is currently being outpolled by the incumbent bunch as the nation goes down the dumper because the populace is entranced by the American Idol reality TV veep candidate and nervous about the color of a man's skin. And buying into all sorts of junk from the McPalin campaign and its many surrogates.
Our ideas and policies are far better than theirs. And yet? If the election were held today, we might well lose.
We've gone the high road in the last two elections, and that got us eight years of Bush. I have no desire to tack another four on.
Ok, Steve, I will be pragmatic about it. Even if it is no holds barred, do you think this photo is going to sway an undecided voter? Is it really going to get them to say, "I was on the fence until I saw that scary picture of McCain. Now I KNOW he's evil." No, probably not.
The news cycle was about the Obama Waffle mix and its racist overtones. It was shameful. It made the McCain camp look bad even though they had nothing to do with it. It could have been out there all this week.
But Greenberg killed it. Even though Obama had nothing to do with this and no doubt finds it utterly distasteful it reflects on him. Now the undecided voter is saying, "That waffle thing was awful, but they're both doing it. One's no worse than the other."
That's why it's bad no matter how you look at it. It was offensive AND stupid. It may actually offer some degree of truth, but that is buried under its extremist presentation. It does Obama no good regardless of whether it's your road or mine.
The photo was an angry attack on McCain by a woman with no clue about the damage she has done and that, in the end, serves no purpose other than to drag Obama down.
I'm feeling ya, arlopop. However, in my cold, cold heart, I'm kinda leaning towards stever here.
But I'm an ass.
Plagiarist!
