Before she became mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin was a member of the AIP party, the Alaskan Independence Party. She maintained ties to them through her career and even recorded a welcome for their convention in Fairbanks this year. They actively supported her run for Governor in 2006.
The AIP's primary goal is secession from the United States. It's founder, Jon Vogler, stated as part of his platform when he ran for governor 1982 and 1986:
1# Stopping the sale of oil to the continental US in order to sell to it Japan.
2# Joining OPEC
3# Developing a military alliance with the Soviet Union to protect against US aggression.
4# And allowing above ground nuclear testing in the Arctic to open the area up for oil development
"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
Joe Vogler
Vogler was murdered under suspicious circumstances in 1993. Manfried West confessed to the killing the following year. Vogler was buried in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada, fulfulling a wish that he not be buried under the American flag.
On their website the AIP state their goal as being:
"The Alaskan Independence Party's goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:
Remain a Territory.
Become a separate and Independent Nation.
Accept Commonwealth status.
Become a State."
via Daily Kos
So let's examine this for a moment.
Obama takes a beating from the right because his pastor made some inflammatory remarks about America, but Palin gets a pass for being a member of a political party whose stated goal was secesson from the United States; whose founder advocated a strategic military alliance with the Soviet Union against the U.S.; who in a fit of ridiculous madness promoted the use of nuclear weapons to melt the glaciers in order to more easily build a highway to Juneau?
Seriously, she gets a pass!?!?!
This has become a SNL sketch.
