Hendrik Kerstens is a photographer whose work is informed by, and deeply reminiscent of, the Dutch masters of painting and their tronies. Tronies were paintings of that age that were not really portraits, but were instead the artists' personal works. Paula Pictures, his long-running portrait series of his daughter, going back to her early childhood, is beautiful and filled with images that feel both timeless and very much of our age. Very simple and still, the photographs show his mastery of light. I like them a lot.
