The Wild Gift That's Kept On Giving

Anyone who knows me knows of the deep and profound affection I have maintained, nigh on three decades now, for X. The fired passion I professed in my youth has become warm coals, but the band can still get to me. A couple of times a year I get the bug and indulge myself. Today was one of those days.

From 79

From 81

And 2004, doe and exene.

And then, there is this, for an entire new generation, Year One on Pancake Mountain.

i remember seeing X superlate at night on don kirshner's show back when I was all of 13 or so. shocking, mesmerizing, I couldn't take my eyes off of Billy Zoom.

So many seem to say that about him. It's no surprise that the band died an ignoble death after he packed it in. Nothing against Dave Alvin or Tony Gilkyson, but neither of them had the charisma (or the rockabilly flavor) that he brought to the mix. I've always thought he left when he saw where the band was headed and just thought it looked too much like work, but I could be wrong. Either way, I like the fact that they're all playing again - even if it's to pad their IRAs. There are worse choices made by a lot of their contemporaries in their later years. Just look at Henry.
