Konk

The Boy has developed an interesting lingual tic. He will frequently end a sentence, usually a declarative one, with the word, "konk": "We should do a puzzle konk;" "You eat with me konk;" "That a trashtruck konk." You will notice from the examples that there is no comma between the last word and konk. That's because there is no pause - konk just gets dropped in at the end as if it finishes the thought. We don't know from whence this is derived. Despite our requests to explain its origin the best he has provided us is: "It's like when you're playing or watching tv and it ends, you konk - you know - that's how it is... konk."

The konk is not constant and it appears to us to have no regular pattern. We can not find anything to which he's been exposed that set it off. It's not annoying - it can be funny - but it is so curious. Perhaps even more disturbing, we have taken to using it ourselves. "See you later, honey konk." "Where are my glasses konk?" "I'm beat konk."

I'm sure he will pass through this phase with no memory of the idosyncracy, but it is slowing embedding itself into our speech patterns and I wonder if we will rid ourselves of it as easily as the damned instigator konk.

Nicholas sometimes ends his very scripted sentences with an unexpected "Smash!" - complete with whiny nasally twang - a Stoogism that I picked up from some boyfriend, husband, Saturday morning cartoons, or that brief phase where I felt there had to be Moe to the Stooge mania than just a bunch of one-liners I didn't understand - so I rented just about every Stooge VCR available (late 80s maybe?). He also requests that I add in a exclamatory "Smash" by adding to my sentences, and then saying, "Mommy SMASH!" It's very flattering to think I finally have one of the Stoogisms down well enough to get special requests! (c;'
